Historians agree that amusement rides originated in Russia. The rides were originally called Ice Slides. These rides appeared during the 17th century throughout Russia, but mainly became popular in St. Petersburg. The rides were built from lumber and sheets of ice several inches thick. The rides reached seventy or more feet high and stretched hundreds of feet long. The Russians used large sleds to ride down these Ice Slides.

Most Historians conclude that the French were the first to add wheels to these slides. By 1718, there were two rides with wheels built by the French. These two rides were called Russes a Belleville and Promenades Adriennes. Both of these rides had cars that were interlocked into the track. The Belleville ride was the first ride to have the axels of each car fit into grooves in the track.

The first looping roller coaster was built in the Frascati Gardens in Paris, France. The ride reached forty feet high and had a thirteen foot wide loop. This ride was tested under every conceivable circumstance before humans were actually allowed to ride. The ride quickly grew "out of fashion". It would be several years before La Marcus Thompson would create the first roller coaster in the United States to change the amusement industry forever.
