The world's first sailors, the ancient Phoenicians how to use the power of the wind. In the 1600's the Dutch used wind power on land to pump water from the Rhine River. People today still use wind energy to generate power creating electricity.

The blades of the wind mill act as a turbine which turns a set of gears that drives the generator converting the mechanical energy of moving water into electrical energy. the amount of power the windmill produces depends on the speed and the angle the wind going across the blades. As the blades turn faster the windmill produces more power.

In order to supply electricity to large areas, hundreds of windmills must be built together on a wind farm.  Places like California, Hawaii, and New Hampshire use wind farms to provide electricity to areas in these states.  The countries of Denmark and Germany use wind farms to supply electricity.

Fun Fact : All the windmills in the U.S. put together can produce enough electricity to power a city the size of Chicago.
